Georgia Congressman David Scott Support Fibroid Awareness

 Fibroid Awareness

With millions of women around the country suffering from uterine fibroids, the movement to heighten fibroid awareness is gaining momentum.  At a recent health fair sponsored by Congressman David Scott, Dr. Neel Patel and I talked to the Congressman about his commitment to increase fibroid awareness on the national level.

Congressman Scott, a dear friend of mine and someone I’ve known and admired for years, is doing his part to make health care accessible to his constituents, particularly those who are under insured or uninsured.

Dr. Patel and I talked to many women who suffer from fibroids but have no insurance. Dr. Patel and I discussed the possibility of developing a plan to offer charitable treatment for women who are uninsured. I met with Martha from Scott’s Washington, DC office and Chandra from Congressman Scott’s Georgia office.

Both ladies are involved in the mission to bring the issue of uterine fibroids into the national spotlight. They told us they’d keep us briefed on whether Dr. Patel and I would be invited Capitol Hill to attend a briefing designed to educate other members of Congress on the need for fibroid awareness.

Congressman Scott has been working with Tanika Gray Valbrun, the founder of the White Dress Project. The White Dress Project is designed to bring attention and awareness to the issue of uterine fibroids and to shine the spotlight on women who suffer from uterine fibroids. She is credited for creating an outlet for women to be able to share their stories.

I commend Tanika for taking on this effort. She says it hasn’t been an easy journey, but Tanika is determined to make sure that fibroids has a national observance. In Georgia, fibroid awareness month is celebrated in the month of July.
